Establishing Farms in Schools

Project Goal

To support all public and private educational institutions by establishing school farms to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to foster the development of agriculture as an alternative career choice while promoting entrepreneurship in the field.

Project Description

The Department of Education within the Ministry of Education is embarking on a project that seeks to establish farms in all public and private schools in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

We subscribe to the notion that "growth in the agricultural sector is recognised as one of the main pathways towards sustainable development and poverty reduction" (World Bank, 2008).

As educators, we must help students create avenues for success while ensuring they are given every opportunity to enhance skills and understanding in fields that lead to the country's social and economic growth.

This approach to teaching sustainability in schools will help students learn how to produce their food and care for animals through farming while considering business opportunities in the field of Agricultural Science.

Students will learn how to become self-sufficient, self-reliant, and value team and collaborative work with the end goal of developing and promoting the field of Agricultural Science.

Project Objectives

  • To develop practical skills, knowledge, and appreciation for the field of Agricultural Science.
  • To develop an understanding of farming, care for animals, and food production.
  • To encourage the use of practical, hands-on learning outside the classroom to enhance the requirements of the national curriculum.
  • To improve self-efficacy (entrepreneurship) among the nation’s youth
  • Encourage the development of students' social and emotional development through teamwork.
  • To develop a clear understanding of healthy eating.
