United Nations and Other International Conventions

The TCI has signed on to six core conventions. They are as follows:

  • The International Covenant on civil and political rights (ICCPR);
  • The International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICCPR);
  • The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT);
  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)
  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); and
  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD).

Further to the above Core Conventions, the Turks and Caicos Islands, by ratification and extension, are also partied to the following International Conventions:

  • European Convention on Human Rights, with the Right of individual petition to the European Court of Human Rights;
  • European Convention on Human Rights Protocol No. 1 Possession/Elections;
  • Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery;
  • Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age and Registration;
  • Convention on Political Rights of Women;
  • Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide;
  • Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness;
  • Convention on Stateless Persons;
  • Geneva Conventions 1,11,111,1v (1949)

The International Labour Conventions Nos.

  • ILO Convention No. 29 Forced Labour;
  • ILO Convention No. 87 Freedom of Association and Rights or Organize;
  • ILO Convention No. 98 Rights to Organize and Collective Bargaining;
  • ILO Convention No. 105 of Forced Labour;
  • UNESCO Convention Against Discrimination in Education.
