My fellow Turks and Caicos Islanders, residents and visitors, as you are aware the Turks and Caicos Islands is currently under Tropical Storm Alert.
This means that Tropical Storm conditions are possible within the next 60 hours. Tropical Storm Dorian is currently forecasted to move over or near our Islands by Thursday (August 29, 2019) night and throughout Friday (August 30, 2019). Should the current intensity of Dorian be maintained, the storm is expected to bring conditions such as heavy rainfall and possible strong winds (near 50 miles per hour).
However, be mindful that conditions are subject to change, with little or no notice.
Therefore, at this point, I urge you to pay attention to information issued by the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) on Radio Turks and Caicos or social media. This Department is the official Turks and Caicos Islands
Government Agency responsible for disaster risk management and the coordination of emergency response operations.
My people, again I urge you to pay attention to the Alerts, locate your nearest shelter, stock up on emergency supplies such as food and water, review your family emergency plan, remain vigilant and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of you, your family and property.
To our private sector partners and NGOs as well, we encourage you to continue your preparations and business continuity planning.
Rest assured, my government and I are monitoring closely the projected part of Tropical Storm Dorian and the wider Atlantic Basin during this time. We remain committed to deploying all required resources, both human and capital, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people should Tropical Storm Dorian or any hazard impact our Islands.
A further update will be issued via a press conference tomorrow at 10 am. H.E. Governor Nigel Dakin has advised that “all Civil Servants should report for work tomorrow morning to ensure preparations at their work place have been finalised andfurther instructions to Government employees will be issued tomorrow”.
Take care of yourself and your family and remember, Disaster Management is Everybody’s business!
