Office of the Premier, Local Government & Community Affairs Launched Local Government Enhancement Project

The Office of the Premier, Local Government and Community Affairs has launched an initiative to strengthen and enhance the operation, management and effectiveness of the current District Administration and to see what areas can be transformed by modernization, improved and reinforced upon to ensure its continued effectiveness in delivering the needs of the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Grand Turk being the capital of the Country is the hub of all Government offices; however, the remaining islands: Providenciales, Salt Cay, North, Middle and South Caicos have to commute to Grand Turk for access to crucial Government services.

The Local Government Review and Modernisation Committee, was established to facilitate a comprehensive review of Local Government administration performed by individuals from a cross section of Government and District Administration experience in order to effectively formulate a report that will guide the establishment of the most suitable model of local government for the Turks and Caicos Islands with special attention to the islands that have limited access to crucial Government services.

Members of the committee as agreed by Cabinet are as follows: -

Mr. Ronlee James – Chairman

Hon. Derek Taylor - Member

Mr. Llewelyn Handfield - Member

Mrs. Almaida Wilson - Member

Mr. Ricardo Don-Hue Gardiner - Member

The goal of the Local Government Review and Modernisation Committee is to:

  1. To review the current structure in light of single constituency and all island elected representatives;
  2. To review other regional models.
  3. Engage in community consultations to ascertain the concerns of the populace in relation to strengthening local government and district administration.
  4. To make recommendation to the Premier for the modernisation of TCI's model via a report that will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration and implementation.

The committee has drafted proposals that will be taken to consultation to determine how the public would like to see government represented on Salt Cay, North, Middle and South Caicos. The Committee met for the first time on Monday, 4 November 2019 at Hon. Hilly Ewing Building, Providenciales.

Consultations will launch in the coming weeks.
