The Hon. Karen Malcolm, Minister of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services invites you to join the Department of Culture in commemorating National Heritage Month, October 2018. The theme for the occasion is "Celebrating from whence we've come". There is an extensive schedule of activities planned which kick starts on Sunday, September 30, with an Ecumenical Service at the Salem Baptist Church, Grand Turk, commencing at 11:00am. It is important that you mark all scheduled dates on your calendar as the activities planned have been specifically designed with you in mind.
National Heritage Month is a time in which we wholeheartedly observe and celebrate the rich cultural history of our country. It is through our celebrations that we recognize the work done by our forefathers, and the rich legacies they have left for our enjoyment.
As a broad framework, we aim to: recognize the role that culture plays in the preservation of our rich heritage; create an avenue for each island to showcase different aspects of our diverse heritage; contribute to the education of our youth with particular emphasis being placed on arts, culture and heritage; and help bridge the gap in transmission of indigenous knowledge, skills and techniques that are specific to our cultural heritage.
As we celebrate, we ask that we each reflect on our level of patriotism to this beautiful country; the role each citizen must play in making this a safer place in which to live, and the steps that are to be taken to make the TCI a more unified country.
Enjoy the celebrations; encourage your neighbours and friends to come out and be a part of the month –long activities.
