8 POACHERS APPREHENDED IN TCI WATERS

 

On Wednesday, 03 April 2019, the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR) and the Marine Police received an anonymous tip-off alerting them to illegal activity on the South side of the Caicos bank.

Officers intercepted 2 poacher vessels in the vicinity of Whale Breakers, in the act of illegal fishing. One vessel, a 22ft Panga powered by two 40 horse-power Yamaha engines, and another 22ft Panga powered by two 60 horse-power engines, as well as 8 suspects were apprehended.

 

The suspects, Dominican nationals, were captured with marine product on board their vessel.

 

The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged and prosecuted in accordance with the Fisheries Limits Ordinance and the Fisheries Protection Ordinance, as amended.

 

The DECR would like to appeal to the public to seek to collaborate and cooperate with the Department by reporting any suspicious activities within our waters.
