The Department of Statistics was established under the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics in 1998 following the restructuring of the Finance Department.
In the early days, the Department was mainly an Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and was primarily concerned with coordinating the formulation and implementation of the Public Sector Investment Program, including resource mobilization by borrowing and relations with international development partners. The small core staff also oversaw the statistics function, which has now evolved into a separate full pledge Statistics Department. The Statistics Department is currently manned by a Chief Statistician, Deputy Chief Statistician, Statistical Manager, 2 Senior Statisticians, 2 Statisticians and 3 Statistical Technicians and a Mapping Technician.
