MINISTRY OF HEALTH’S COVID-19 UPDATE #181

The Ministry of Health advises the public that as at 12am on 7th September 2020:

Except in the case of emergencies, the National Public Health Laboratory currently operates a 6-day work week to allow for appropriate deep cleaning and other preparatory work to be done on Sundays. As such, regular activities are minimized or suspended during weekends to allow for such processes to be completed.

As such, no change has occurred in the Turks & Caicos Islands’ COVID-19 position since the previous update. The number of active confirmed cases in the TCI remains at three hundred and twenty-nine (329). Five (5) confirmed cases continue to be under hospital care. The Public Health Team continues to implement aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

The total number of recoveries stands at two hundred and sixty-four (264). total confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to date remains at five hundred and ninety-nine (599). No new covid-19 related deaths have been recorded, leaving the number of covid-19 related deaths at five (5).

No new test results have been recorded by the National Public Health Laboratory, due to Sunday closure for deep cleaning. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of two thousand six hundred and eighty-eight (2688) test results, with two thousand and eighty-nine (2089) confirmed to be negative and five hundred and ninety-nine (599) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

The number of persons in quarantine/observation remains 876. This includes: Confirmed cases (329), primary and secondary contacts of confirmed cases (547). Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

To date, a total of 1,744 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status. 

Local testing is being conducted for persons in a range of categories, according to the national testing strategy. This includes frontline workers and those who may need to travel for treatment abroad. These persons would not be reflected in quarantine numbers.

The public is strongly urged to follow all health advice and guidelines from the Ministry, especially as we progress with the phased reopening.

Please note the following definitions:

  • A suspected person is someone who meets the case definition as outlined by WHO and CARPHA - and is experiencing symptoms.
  • A person in quarantine is an individual on island who may have come in proximity to suspected or confirmed cases - and have not exhibited symptoms.

Let's continue to reduce the risk by:

  1. Washing our hands for 20secs or more.
  2. Wearing of masks required in public.
  3. Practicing social distancing.
  4. Prepare your home, office and other surroundings by following the advice of the Ministry of Health and other credible health agencies.
  5. Cover your coughs and sneezes (use your elbow or a tissue which should be properly disposed of).
  6. Keep frequently touched surfaces clean e.g. tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.
  7. Protect those who are vulnerable in the community such as the elderly or those with underlying health conditions.
  8. Do not discriminate against persons who have or are suspected of having COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that as at 12am on 5th September 2020:

the Turks & Caicos Islands has continued to see some change in its COVID-19 position since the previous update. Seven (7) new caseS of covid-19 has been identified, with one (1) new case located in Grand Turk and all others located on the island of providenciales. All are contacts of known confirmed cases.

forty-three (43) new recoveries have been recorded over the past 24hrs. the total number of recoveries now stands at two hundred and sixty-four (264). The number of active confirmed cases in the TCI has decreased to three hundred and twenty-eight (328). Four (4) confirmed cases are now under hospital care. The Public Health Team continues to implement aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

total confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to date now stands at five hundred and ninety-eight (598). No new covid-19 related deaths have been recorded. total number of covid-19 related deaths stands at fIVE (5).

Thirty-two (32) new test result has been recorded by the National Public Health Laboratory over the past 24hrs, confirming seven (7) indivIduals positive and twenty-five (25) negative for covid-19. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of two thousand six hundred and eighty-two (2682) test results, with two thousand and eighty-four (2084) confirmed to be negative and five hundred and ninety-eight (598) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The change in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of the new confirmed cases and their contacts being added to quarantine/observation status; With the new recoveries, and persons whose quarantine period having been expired, being removed. To date, a total of 1,744 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status.

the Turks & Caicos Islands has experienced considerable change in its COVID-19 position since the previous update. Twenty-two (22) new caseS of covid-19 has been identified, with four new cases located in Grand Turk and all others being located on the island of providenciales. ten (10) are contacts of known confirmed cases, elEven (11) are still under investigation with no clear epidemiological link and one (1) is a traveller from a country with sustained local transmission.

the total number of recoveries remains at two hundred and twenty (220). The number of active confirmed cases in the TCI now stands at three hundred and fifty-one (351). two (2) confirmed cases continue to be under hospital care. The Public Health Team continues to implement aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

To date, the TCI has recorded a total of two thousand six hundred and one (2601) test results, with two thousand and twenty-four (2024) confirmed to be negative and five hundred and seventy-seven (577) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

The number of persons in quarantine/observation has increased to 844. This includes: Confirmed cases (351), primary contacts of confirmed cases (409), secondary contacts of confirmed cases (84). Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The change in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of the new confirmed cases being added to quarantine/observation status. To date, a total of 1,622 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status.

FIFTH COVID-19 RELATED DEATH

Joint TCI Hospital and TCI Government Press Release

InterHealth Canada - Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital is saddened to announce the country’s fifth COVID-19 related death.

The patient passed away at the Cockburn Town Medical Centre – Emergency Department on the evening of Monday August 31st, 2020 and presented in a medical state that worsened shortly after admission.

While the individual was not known to be symptomatic for COVID-19, a swab was taken as a precautionary measure and submitted to the National Public Health Lab for testing. The death is now officially classified as COVID-19 related.

The Public Health Team continues to conduct contact tracing efforts. The TCI Hospital and the Ministry of Health wish to extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family and friends on the unfortunate loss of their loved one.
