MINISTRY OF HEALTH’S COVID-19 UPDATE #176

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that as at 12am on 2nd September 2020:

the Turks & Caicos Islands has experienced considerable change in its COVID-19 position since the previous update. Seventeen (17) new caseS of covid-19 has been identified, all being located on the island of providenciales. Eight (8) are contacts of known confirmed cases, eight (8) are still under investigation with no clear epidemiological link and one (1) is a traveller from a country with sustained local transmission.

two (2) new recoveries have been recorded, bringing the total number of recoveries to two hundred and twenty (220). The number of active confirmed cases in the TCI now stands at three hundred and thirty (330). two (2) confirmed cases continue to be under hospital care. The Public Health Team continues to implement aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

total confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to date now stands at five hundred and fifty-five (555). No new covid-19 related deaths have been recorded. total number of covid-19 related deaths remains at four (4).

Sixty-two (62) new test result has been recorded by the National Public Health Laboratory over the past 24hrs, confirming seventeen (17) indivduals positive and forty-five (45) negative for covid-19. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of two thousand five hundred and fifty-seven (2557) test results, with two thousand and two (2002) confirmed to be negative and five hundred and fifty-five (555) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

The number of persons in quarantine/observation has increased to 823. This includes: Confirmed cases (330), primary contacts of confirmed cases (409), secondary contacts of confirmed cases (84). Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The change in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of the new confirmed cases and their contacts being added to quarantine/observation status, as well as the new recoveries and the quarantine period having expired for several individuals. To date, a total of 1,622 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status. 

Local testing is being conducted for persons in a range of categories, according to the national testing strategy. This includes frontline workers and those who may need to travel for treatment abroad. These persons would not be reflected in quarantine numbers.

The public is strongly urged to follow all health advice and guidelines from the Ministry, especially as we progress with the phased reopening.

Please note the following definitions:

  • A suspected person is someone who meets the case definition as outlined by WHO and CARPHA - and is experiencing symptoms.
  • A person in quarantine is an individual on island who may have come in proximity to suspected or confirmed cases - and have not exhibited symptoms.

Let's continue to reduce the risk by:

  1. Washing our hands for 20secs or more.
  2. Wearing of masks required in public.
  3. Practicing social distancing.
  4. Prepare your home, office and other surroundings by following the advice of the Ministry of Health and other credible health agencies.
  5. Cover your coughs and sneezes (use your elbow or a tissue which should be properly disposed of).
  6. Keep frequently touched surfaces clean e.g. tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.
  7. Protect those who are vulnerable in the community such as the elderly or those with underlying health conditions.
  8. Do not discriminate against persons who have or are suspected of having COVID-19.

MINISTRY OF HEALTH OFFICE IN GRAND TURK CLOSES TEMPORARILY FOR DEEP CLEANING

The Ministry Health’s Office in Grand Turk will be closed to the general public from 1st September 2020 until 4th September 2020 in order to facilitate deep cleaning. This is being undertaken out of an abundance of caution following contact tracing efforts by the Public Health Team. The Ministry of Health wishes to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, staff will continue to work remotely.

The Ministry of Health wishes to remind the general public to practice the relevant public health measures in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 throughout the TCI.

Persons should:

  1. Continue to build their immune system by taking a daily supplement of vitamin C and D3;
  2. Eat healthy servings of fruit and vegetables as part of their daily diet;
  3. Stay hydrated – drink at least 8 glasses of water daily;
  4. Wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
  5. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available;
  6. Maintain social distancing of 6 feet between persons;
  7. Wear face coverings in public settings;
  8. Avoid mass gatherings or crowds;
  9. Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or use disposable tissues;
  10. If you have symptoms of Covid-19 which include cough, shortness of breath, fever, diarrhea, loss of sense of taste or smell-please stay home and contact the Health Hotlines on 232 9444, or 333 0911;
  11. Do not visit health care facilities if you have symptoms or signs of Covid-19, call the Health Hotlines for guidance unless your symptoms are severe;
  12. If you are under quarantine by the Public Health Team, please remain at home and comply with the guidance provided to you;
  13. If you are contacted by the Public Health Team as a part of contact tracing activities, please provide all of the information requested to assist them in their investigations;
  14. Develop a Covid-19 Family Plan;
  15. Refrain from speculation and spreading rumors;

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that as at 12am on 1st September 2020:

Significant change has occurred in the Turks & Caicos Islands’ COVID-19 position since the previous update. Thirty (30) new case of covid-19 has been identified, with one (1) new case located in Grand Turk and all others on the island of providenciales. fifteen (15) are contacts of known confirmed cases and fifteen (15) are still under investigation with no clear epidemiological link.

The number of active confirmed cases in the TCI now stands at three hundred and fifteen (315). two (2) confirmed cases continue to be under hospital care. Except in the case of emergencies, the National Public Health Laboratory currently operates a 6-day work week to allow for appropriate deep cleaning and other preparatory work to be done on Sundays. As such, regular activities are minimized or suspended during weekends to allow for such processes to be completed.

Taking the above into consideration, the Turks & Caicos Islands has seen some change to its COVID-19 position since the previous update. one (1) new case of covid-19 has been identified, located on the island of providenciales, and is still under investigation with no clear epidemiological link. The individual has passed away and efforts to contact next of kin are underway. total number of covid-19 related deaths now stands at four (4).

the total number of recoveries remains at two hundred (200). The number of active confirmed cases in the TCI stands at three hundred and three (303). two (2) confirmed cases continue to be under hospital care. total confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to date now stands at five hundred and eight (508). TCI RECORDS ITS FOURTH COVID-19 RELATED DEATH

Today, 31st August 2020, the Ministry of Health reports its fourth Covid-19 related death. Efforts are underway to notify the next of kin and an investigation is ongoing into the full circumstances of the individual’s death. The thoughts and prayers of the Ministry of Health are with the family and friends of this individual.
