JOB SUMMARY: 

To support the Superintendent of Prisons to maintain security, control, supervision and the safe custody of Offenders. The Prison Service is a professional organisation whose duty is to serve the public by keeping in custody those committed by the court. The duty is to look after Offenders with humanity and to help them lead law abiding and useful lives in custody and after release. The position has specific responsibility for the development, operation and effective Management of Rehabilitation Programs and Sentence Management. The position will engage with external agencies in the development of Offender Community re integration.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide management of Prison Service and Government Rehabilitation Strategy.
  • Assist the Assistant Superintendent in managing the Prison rehabilitation agenda.
  • Engage with Government service providers, Social Services, Education, Healthcare, Labor commission, National Drug Unit, Housing Unit in relation to planning prisoner release strategies to reduce re offending.
  • Engage with NGO’s and voluntary agencies in expanding facilities and support for Offenders released from Prison.
  • Promote public awareness of Offender re integration
  • Ensure Sentence Management requirements are completed.
  • Comply with all general orders, standing orders, code of ethics and notices to Staff. To check for instructions and notices since last shift.
  • Report to the Deputy Superintendent any matters affecting the staff under your charge.
  • Report to the Assistant Superintendent anything affecting the prisoner population.
  • Ensure all inmates and staff under your charge maintains proper discipline.
  • Ensure that no unauthorised persons or articles enter the institution.
  • Ensure that no officer leave their post without being properly relieved and to be responsible for the direct supervision of all Female Officers, to liaise with the Senior Officer shift leader for any shift related matters.
  • Other duties as may be directed from time to time by the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications: 

  • Degree/equivalent in related field
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated leadership skills/course
  • Counselling or Education teaching skills

Experience: 

Criminal Justice Experience required, preferred experience in the field of Rehabilitation, Teaching, provision of Offending behaviour interventions. Networking skills.

REMUNERATION PACKAGE:

SALARYGrade 7 $44,138.80 per annum
