The Professional Councils
Three (3) health professions councils have been established:
- The Medicine and Dentistry Professions Council;
- The Nursing and Midwifery Professions Council; and
- The Allied Health Professions and Pharmacy Professions Council.
Each professional council shall determine the registration and licencing of its health professionals, regulate the professional conduct and discipline of registered professionals, establish and promote high standards of education and training requirements for registered professionals, establish and promote high standards of ethics and performance of registered professionals, and advise the Ministry of Health on appropriate matters.
Professional councils may investigate any matter concerning the practice of medicine and the conduct of a registered professional. Complaints about a health professional should be made in writing, and a council shall decide whether to proceed with an investigation into an allegation. Where so determined, a hearing of the matter shall occur with the health professional or their representative, any witnesses, and members of the professional council.
Decisions of the council may be appealed to the Health Appeals Tribunal. This must be done within twenty-eight (28) days of the communication of the decision. Appeals should be made by notice in writing addressed to the Chief Executive Officer at the Health Professions Authority.
