JOB SUMMARY:

This post supports the Director of DECR. It is a senior management position with responsibility to enforce environmental and protected area laws in the TCI. The Deputy Director assists the Director to carry out strategic planning, policy design and make recommendations to government regarding appropriate legislation. The Deputy Director provides support for the daily operations of the Department.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the development of effective strategic planning for conservation, environmental protection and protected areas management.
  • Assist with the development of Terms of Reference (TOR) for environmental works.
  • Assist with the review and making of recommendations for conditions for approval of environmental studies submitted to the Government.
  • Assist with the preparation of Cabinet Papers on matters that affect the environment.
  • Assist with the formulation of guidelines for proper resource use and environmental management.
  • Assist with the development of management plans for Protected Areas, and other environmental and coastal resources.
  • Assist with the preparation and management of Department budgets.
  • Manage and promote productivity and welfare of Department staff.
  • Organize staff and planning meetings and work programmes.
  • Promote environmental public awareness and conservation.
  • Liaise with the Department of Planning and other stakeholder on development projects, if requested.
  • Attend various committees such as Beach and Coastal Vending Committee, the National Parks & Environment Advisory Committee.
  • Liaise with various stakeholders including vendors, fishermen, water sports operators, hoteliers and the general public.
  • Interact with experts and other stakeholders in furtherance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Prepare funding proposals to support the activities of the Department.
  • Prepare reports on resource use and management.
  • Oversee enforcement of environmental, protected areas laws and issuance of appropriate licenses and permits.
  • Represent TCIG on technical committees, workshop and other public forums.
  • Act as Director in the Director’s absence.
  • Adhere to all Public Service codes, rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties assigned by proper authorities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Development or related field or equivalent.
  • A Master's degree is desirable
  • Certified Open water diver
  • Sound Knowledge and Competency in:
    1. Project Management
    2. Environmental Research and Development
    3. Environmental Risk & Impact Assessments
    4. Sustainable Development
  • The position requires a minimum of five (5) years relevant managerial experience in an environment related field, of which at least three (3) years are at a senior level.

REMUNERATION PACKAGE:

SALARY – Grade 8 $54,789.20 per annum
