2014/2015 Lobster Season

2014 Lobster Season: Opening Statistics

Friday, 15 August, saw the opening of the 2014/2015 Lobster Season. The first day saw opening catch landed, for all islands, total to 34 906 pounds (lb). The total catch landed for the 16th August was less than that of the first day, tallying to 19 093 pounds (lb). This was attributed to poor weather conditions. Compared to 2013, catch landed this year was 2,118 pounds (lb) less during the first two days of the open season.

DEMA Officers were onsite to inspect catch as fishermen came into both the channel and plant and, officers were able to complete a boat patrol to ensure that any potential offenders were deterred from participating in illegal activities.

2014/2015 Lobster Season Opens 15 August 2014

The Department of Environment & Maritime Affairs (DEMA) would like to remind all fishing interests, restaurants and general public of the opening of Lobster Season, on Friday 15 August 2014. The season will run through to 15 March 2015.

Postponing the season by 15 days has been proven to improve catch by allowing lobsters adequate time to finish spawning. Catch statistics last year showed that even though the season was shortened by 15 days, 80,000 pounds more lobster was landed in the shortened season than in the previous year.
