Inaugural Meeting of the Turks and Caicos Islands Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

The Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services is pleased to announce that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) convened its inaugural meeting on Monday 19th August 2019 at the Ministry of Health Conference Room in Providenciales. The meeting was presided over by the Chair Ms.

Mikette Been, Registered Nurse/Midwife and Chief of Clinical Services, TCI Hospital.

Other members of the Nursing and Midwifery Council present at the inaugural meeting were:

  • Mrs. Jackurlyn Sutton, Chief Nursing Officer(CNO) and Deputy Chair (ex-officio)
  • Dr. Derrick Aarons, Health Registrar (ex-officio; Health Registrar)
  • Mrs. Elaine Forbes, Registered Nurse (Retired)
  • Ms. Dominique Gardiner, Attorney at Law, Public Service

During opening remarks, Ms. Been expressed gratitude for such an important appointment stating; “I am not only delighted but feel privileged to be asked to chair the Nursing and Midwifery Council. What excites me most is building on what has been done in the past and looking at endless possibilities for this Council, to suggest opportunities for improvements and working in partnership with the other Councils in shaping the health system with a strong and collective voice. I am inspired with the vision of the Minister of Health and Human Services; Dr. Aarons and other members of the team, for leading us to meet the goals of each Council. I look forward to working with the team to provide leadership and meet the targets we will be responsible for.”

CNO Mrs. Jackurlyn Sutton expressed her profound delight in stating; “The work on the Health Professions Ordinance has been successful in bringing us to this point today, with the establishment and 1st meeting of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.”

The recently appointed Nursing and Midwifery Council assumes responsibility for the registration and annual re-licensing of nurses and midwives across the Turks and Caicos Islands, the promotion of high standards of nursing practice, the regulation of professional conduct, and the establishment of high standards of education and ongoing professional development.
